Best Beaches in the Algarve for Families

The Algarve is a classic family holiday destination, and for good reason. Thousands flock here every summer for the reliable weather, golf, cuisine, resorts, and above all, that glorious coastline. If you find yourself on one of the most popular and crowded beaches; such as those around Albufeira, you may feel like an extra in an ‘Inbetweeners’ movie. Hardly a kid-haven. We’ve beach-hopped our way around the Algarve (it’s a tough job), to bring you the best places in the Algarve for families who are all about a beach break. Get your lilos, buckets and spades at the ready!

Praia de Odeceixe, Odeceixe

In the north of the region, this unique beach is worth the drive. Shaped like a flat tongue, this white sandy beach is at the mouth of a river – giving it the best of both worlds – shallow calm waters on one side, and more boisterous waves on the other. There’s a surf school on the beach itself, and about half an hour’s walk will take you for lunch and some shade in the village of Odeceixe.

Ingrina, Zavial

Instead of flocking with the hoards to neighbouring Praia do Zavial, head west to the next headland to the glorious beach at Ingrina. This pretty shell-shaped cove is sheltered and quiet, ideal for those with young families to relax, knowing that no-one can wander too far! The sea is calm, which makes it perfect for splashing around in the shallows. At the top of the beach is a laid-back restaurant, serving up relaxed fish dishes and welcome breaks from the lunchtime sun.

Praia da Marinha, Carvoeiro

Surely this beach is the poster-child for the Algarve? Signature amber rock stacks, boat trips to explore the surrounding caves, clear blue water perfect for curious snorkelers, and silky white sand. Although there’s only a small beach hut serving snacks, it’s well worth a visit for you and your family.

Praia do Anção, Faro

This enormous stretch of pristine beach is a popular family beach. It has lifeguards patrolling the calm waters, plenty of space, umbrellas and sunbeds to rent, water-sports galore and lots of choice for snacks and beach bars. Even the sand dunes behind it are protected, which had prevented too much hotel build up around this beautiful stretch of shore.
